Thousands of people have called My Friend’s Place home over these past 30+ years. 125 to 175 people stay at the shelter every year. This number includes roughly 35 homeless families with children. More than 1000 people request temporary shelter at My Friend’s Place annually, however because of space limitations many of these people are turned away.
Our number served per year has decreased in the last 5 years due to housing shortages. A healthy real estate market has a 7% vacancy rate, that is for every 100 apartments 7 are empty and on the market to rent. Currently our vacancy rate is somewhere between .5% and 1%, that is only 1 apartment for every 200 is vacant and on the market. Our clients are now staying longer and longer as they just can not compete with the number of people out there that can pay more rent, have stellar rental histories, make three times or more than the monthly rent, have a credit score of 650 or more. Most apartment managers are also now requiring larger and larger application fees with criminal record background checks as well as credit checks that our clients can just not afford to pay, just to be told sorry you don't qualify.
